Radon & Lung Cancer Prevention
Testing and Risk Reduction for Homes Across British Columbia
No one deserves to be exposed to high radon levels at home
Why Radon at Home in BC?
Invisible, odourless radon gas
Increases lung cancer risk
Breathed in over many years
Seeps into homes through cracks in floors
Radon is an invisible radioactive gas that can build up in homes and increase the risk of lung cancer over time. According to Health Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and causes about 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year in Canada.
Why Measure Radon at Home?
Radon can enter any home from the soil and build up indoors. Because most people spend 12 or more hours a day at home, long-term exposure can increase health risks—especially for children, older adults, smokers, and people with chronic lung or heart conditions. Testing is the only way to know if radon levels are high.
Why Test in British Columbia?
Radon is more common than many people realize. According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, up to 7% of homes in British Columbia may have radon levels above Health Canada’s guideline. Testing helps identify homes that may need action.
The good news: Radon is easy to measure, and if levels are high, they can be reduced.

According To Health Canada:
What is Radon?
-
"Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from uranium in the ground that can get into your home undetected. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it."
Radon is in your home
-
All homes contain some level of radon—the question is how much.
-
National surveys have found 7% of Canadian homes exceed the safety guidelines.
-
The only way to know your radon level is to test. The BC Centre for Disease Control recommends testing in all homes across British Columbia.
-
In enclosed spaces such as houses, radon can accumulate to high concentrations and, over time, pose a serious health risk.
-
In general, radon levels are highest in the lowest levels of a building, such as a basement.
Radon causes "Lung Cancer"
-
16% of all lung cancers are radon-related, resulting in 3,000 lung cancer deaths in Canada each year.
-
It causes lung cancer in non-smokers.
-
People who smoke and are exposed to radon have an even higher risk of lung cancer.
-
The health risk from radon is long-term not immediate. The longer you are exposed to high levels of radon, the greater your risk.
